Happening this week

The National Social Security System (NSSS) will not come into effect as soon as people had expected. Still in the discussion stages, the NSSS is aimed at pulling all South Africans into the savings net.

Looking at different  models around the world, one question now being raised is, given South Africa’s highly sophisticated retirement savings environment, would there be an opt out clause for the savings component within the NSSS for those who are members of retirement funds administered by the private sector?

Join David Williams as he talks to David Gluckman, Managing Director of Sanlam Umbrella Solutions.

Don't miss it!

2008 Transcripts and video recordings of the shows will be available every Tuesday - click here.

Presently South Africa has a savings rate of 13.7 percent. A year ago, it stood at 15.1 percent. Costs are going up and the total retirement provision is down to 10.9% from 11.5% three years ago. Is there a solution?
Guest: Paul Myeza, MD of Sanlam Group Risk

The Pension Funds Act became law in 1956. Since then, pension funds established by bargaining council were exempted from its provisions. From 1999, new pension funds established by bargaining councils were required to register in terms of the Pension Funds Act and comply with its provisions. Those pension funds established by bargaining councils before that date remained exempted. This exemption was removed with effect from 13/09/2007 and pension funds established by bargaining councils are now regulated in terms of the Pension Funds Act.
