Sections
The competition will be contested in the following sections:
- Economy and Industry (Daily newspapers and online news services)
- Economy and Industry (Magazines and weekly newspapers)
These sections will cover in-depth analyses of, relevant comments on and exclusive reporting (scoops) on the economy and industries in the broadest sense.
- Markets and Companies (Daily newspapers and online news services)
- Markets and Companies (Magazines and weekly newspapers)
These sections would cover thorough and incisive analyses of and exclusive reporting (scoops) on the prospects of and developments in markets and companies, which could influence the merits and potential of the various investment mediums and facilitate informed investment decisions.
- Personal finance (Newspapers, financial magazines and online news services)
- Personal finance (Non-financial publications)
In these sections the emphasis is on the manner in which reports succeed in interpreting involved concepts, economic and financial policy, and explaining the implications for the "average" person in a balanced and informative way. Typical articles are aimed at elucidation, guidance/advice and broadening readers' knowledge of and insight into the economy, the financial markets and the broad business and investment world.
- Broadcast media (including syndication and digital media)
In this section integrating expert comment and discussion, background research and balanced interpretation to broaden the insight of the viewer/listener is of the essence. This will include explanations, interpretations, analyses and discussions of developments in the economic, financial and business sectors and personal finance which were broadcast on radio and television or distributed by means of podcasting or RSS feeds, and in which the journalist/presenter/producer him/herself has made a significant contribution to the programme in terms of conceptualisation, insight, research, text or script.
The same journalist may submit work for radio and TV as separate entries.
If warranted by the number and quality of entries, separate awards for radio and TV will be considered.
- Development Economics (Special section for 2008)
The world has jettisoned the rather rigid set of economic prescriptions for developing countries associated with the so-called Washington Consensus. These prescriptions appeared to place the private sector at the very centre of development, and reduced the State to a marginal role. The realisation is now not only that there is no one-size-fits-all economy strategy, but also that the State has a crucial role to play.
At the same time the South African government has adopted a more active approach to economic development, as evidenced by the Accelerated Shared Growth Initiative for SA.
The special section for Development Economics, therefore, is aimed at capturing some of the news and analysis needed to examine this shift in thinking and approach and its impact on our country.
- Section for members of the Foreign Correspondents' Association
Reports for foreign media covering the Southern African economy, finance or business, i.e. having been published, broadcast or distributed outside the RSA.
The adjudicators reserve the right to transfer an entry to another section if, in their judgement, it is more appropriate.
Awards will be presented to the section winners, the best newcomer and the Financial Journalist of the Year (See Prize-money). |
