News release: 1 September 2008

Young music talent set to captivate Capetonians

The best instrumentalists among South Africa's budding music talent are set to captivate Capetonians when they vie for honours at the 20th Sanlam National Music Competition from 22 to 26 September at the Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre in Parow.

These talented learners (names below) have auditioned successfully in the main centres of our country early in June.

The competition is the only one of its kind for primary school learners and has already been the first step on the road to (even international) acclaim for many young South African musicians.  Medals and prizes worth more than R40 000 are up for grabs by the winners and their teachers.

The learners compete over four rounds in four sections:  Piano, Strings, Woodwind and Brass, and Other Instruments (harp, classical guitar, recorder and percussion).

The competition is presented by the South African Society of Music Teachers (Tygerberg) for learners up to and including grade seven.  The purpose is to identify promising music learners and to give them the opportunity to compete at national level at an early age.  It is open to the general public - the opening and first three rounds FREE OF CHARGE.

In the first two rounds (23 and 24 September) all the candidates get two chances to impress the judges – the second day with a new contrasting programme. The top candidates go through to the third round on the 25th before the finalists are announced for the final round/gala concert on Friday the 26th.
