Interviews

Competency Based Interviews

The objective of this type of interview is to test a variety of different skills. The candidate’s answers are matched to pre-determined criteria and then rated accordingly.

Interview process

Candidates are asked about their perceptions of their own behaviour in specific situations. They need to support their answers with tangible examples, as Sanlam may ask them to give specific instances or situations where they demonstrated those skills.

How to prepare for an interview

Preparation is vital and can improve your confidence in the interview itself. This will enable you to demonstrate your skills and personality without being flustered by the pressure of the interview.

  • Make sure you understand which skills and competencies are required by re-reading the job description.
  • Identify examples from your past where you demonstrated the specific traits required so you can demonstrate your abilities in these areas. The examples ideally should show how your involvement and influence led to achieving the desired goal or outcome.
  • Use the STAR method to tell your story. This universally recognized communication technique for providing complete answers to questions that require examples. This system allows you to set the scene, explain how you handled the situation and detail the outcome.

S = Situation
T = Task
A = Action
R = Result
