Everyone counts. This belief is what drives us to help South Africans improve their financial well-being, live better lives and secure the future for the next generation.

Established in 2011, the Sanlam Foundation is our primary corporate responsibility vehicle and provides a co-ordinated approach to community investment across the Group.

2019 was a year of recalibration of the Foundation to ensure a clear purpose, focus, controls and accountability. The trustees reviewed the Foundation’s strategy in March 2019 and defined key forward-looking outcomes. They confirmed continued investment in the following areas:

The impact of the Sanlam Foundation’s investment is measured continuously. We established key partnerships with stakeholders who shared a similar vision and strategic objectives.

In the next year we plan to launch the Sanlam employee volunteerism platform and the Sanlam Pan Africa corporate social investment (CSI) projects. These are key to proving the Sanlam Foundation’s ability to be a trusted, credible business partner to the Sanlam Group.

We Are Enhancing the Blue Ladder Schools Programme

The Blue Ladder Schools programme partners with schools, educators and communities across South Africa to improve maths tuition and upgrade key facilities. By doing this, we give learners a head start for a brighter future.

The Sanlam Foundation established further partnerships to expand the Blue Ladder Schools programme:

  • A new partnership with the Click Foundation will expand the Blue Ladder Schools programme into Mpumalanga and the Eastern Cape. The Click Foundation promotes the use of technology in education to benefit South African foundation-phase (grades R to 3) learners. Technology can transform education in an efficient, cost-effective and scalable manner. The Click Foundation’s primary focus is to implement online English literacy programmes in underprivileged primary schools country-wide. In this way, technology allows young learners to work at their own pace through fun activities. The Blue Ladder Schools programme supports the Department of Basic Education’s policy goal of all children learning to read fluently, and with comprehension, by the end of grade 3.
  • Sanlam’s Blue Ladder School programme partnered with the Primary Science Programme (PSP) to implement support programmes for teachers at beneficiary schools. PSP is a non-profit organisation that focuses on the professional development of primary school teachers to contribute to excellent primary schooling for all South African children. A key focus area for this initiative is to raise the standard of maths education by helping to improve the way that this subject is taught – through needs-based, practical teacher training and development programmes.
  • The Sanlam Foundation also partnered with North West University to further expand our geographic footprint.

We Are Expanding Our Reach

The Sanlam Foundation has committed to allocating R5 million each year to Sanlam Pan Africa CSI initiatives across various territories until the end of 2021. In 2019, the Sanlam Foundation supported SPA’s CSI initiatives in Mozambique and Zambia.

In Mozambique, a primary school in Maputo was identified to implement aspects of the Blue Ladder schools programme. This included the rehabilitation of classroom blocks and painting of the classrooms and roof. The classroom’s electric work will be fixed to enable the classes to be used at night.

In Zambia, the Sanlam Foundation provided funding for the purchase of 320 school desks for six primary schools. At Mpongwe School, construction started to develop a school block due to be completed in September 2020.
