Sanlam Private Wealth (SPW), the wealth management firm within the JSE-listed Sanlam group, today announced that one of its longest standing leaders, Craig Massey, would return to South Africa after a successful three-year stint establishing SPW in the United Kingdom.
Massey will take up the position of branch operations director and head of stockbroking in the Cape Town head office on 1 January 2016. He originally joined SPW in 2002 to head up the Durban office and subsequently held a range of leadership roles including head of stockbroking and head of the UK operation. Prior to joining SPW he was a director at Merrill Lynch for 13 years.
Daniël Kriel, chief executive of SPW, said: “Craig has done a sterling job in successfully merging the former Principal Investment Management and Merchant Securities businesses, into Sanlam Private Wealth. Over the past three years he has established a values-based business, focussed firmly on its clients and established a solid base from which to grow the business exponentially.
“We are delighted to welcome Craig back to our Cape Town offices where we know his leadership and deep expertise will add value to both our clients and our teams.”
Massey’s role in the UK will be taken up by Jonathan Polin on 1 November. Kriel said that he was delighted to have attracted such a widely-respected leader to take the helm at Sanlam Private Wealth. His most recent role was with Ashcourt Rowan Plc as Group Chief Executive, where he transformed the business from a loss making entity with a market cap of £22 million (+-R446 million) to a business worth £129 million (+-R2 616 million). Hiring someone with his experience, expertise and standing shows the growing strength of the Sanlam brand in the UK.
Polin’s mandate will be to drive the business to the next level, grow the Sanlam brand in the region and build on its position as a leading wealth manager in the UK. Polin has more than 20 years’ experience in the investment and wealth management industry and significant knowledge of the demands and challenges of the UK market.
Kriel said he was excited about Jonathan joining the UK team. “His experience of the UK market and deep knowledge of the wealth management industry, will make a huge contribution to the growth and success of our local business, as well as our broader operations as part of the global wealth management leadership team. We believe he has what it takes to drive our business to the next level, building it into a leading wealth management firm in the UK, to the benefit of clients and stakeholders.”
