Ebenezer Essoka is currently Executive Chairman of IBURU, an advisory firm focused on Economic Development across Sub-Saharan Africa. He retired from Standard Chartered Bank Group as Vice Chairman for Africa in November 2015 after 30 years in senior leadership. Prior to becoming Vice Chairman, Africa he was CEO South Africa and Southern Africa (2008 – 2013) and CEO Central and West Africa (2004 – 2008).
Ebenezer’s banking career began in the USA with Bank of Boston (1982 – 1983). His African professional experience began with the Bank of Boston, Cameroon in 1984.In 1986, he joined SCB and in 1993 was the first African to be appointed Chief Executive Officer of an SCB subsidiary after over 135 years of the Group’s presence on the continent.
In addition to his responsibilities as Executive Chairman IBURU, he is an independent Non-Executive Chairman United Bank for Africa, Cameroon SA, an Independent Non-Executive Director and Chairman of the Audit, Risk and Compliance Committee of Mobile Money Corporation of Cameroon, Senior Advisor to the President of the African Development Bank, working on the African Investment Forum, Independent Non-Executive Chairman of SCB Cote d’Ivoire, Former Chairman of SCB Cameroon (11/2019), Former Independent Non-Executive Director and Chairman of the Audit Committee of SCB Mauritius (12/2019), Former Non-Executive Director CRDB Bank PLC Tanzania (IFC/CDC Nominee – 01/2020), and Former member of the Global Advisory Council of the London Business School (12/2016).
Ebenezer holds a BSc., MBA degree in Finance as well as a Diploma in International Business from Seton Hall University South Orange, New Jersey, USA and has also attended senior executive development programs at INSEAD, London Business School, Templeton College, Oxford University and Cambridge University.
